vintagepyramids asked: I sent you a message a while back...but I guess you didn't get it. After high school I'm going to beauty school to get my esthetician license, but I want my main career to be a makeup-artist. Do you have any advice for me? I would love to eventually do makeup for magazines such as Seventeen. : ) Thanks! Oh, and moving to California to become a makeup-artist would be a smart move right?

Hello. Sorry I didn’t get a message from you, but I’m glad you asked again. That’s awesome that you want to become a makeup artist! My first suggestion is always to sign up for any type of art class you can. Having the knowledge of color theory, shape forms, etc are the best attributes you can get.

Secondly, practice on everyone you can! Get familiar with different face shapes, eye shapes, skin tones and age ranges. Don’t stick to a certain formula or style of makeup either. You have to allow yourself to see makeup as an art in which you can create many possibilities and create your own stylistic form.

Now, I didn’t go to a makeup school because my training in fine art as a painter gave me what I needed. It’s not a bad idea depending on your current experience with makeup. I’ve actually taught many classes on makeup design and it was a lot of fun!

California is an awesome place to work, but there’s also New York. If you want to work within publishing, NY is the place to be. Tons of magazine companies have there HQs there; and of course all the fashion shows! Plus, it is the international port in fashion so you can build connections to London and Paris. California is great for ads, tv, movies, celebrity, some magazine, etc.

Networking is the key to get to where you need to go in this business. So stay positive, outgoing and approachable. People like to work with others that they can get comfortable with quickly. Bonne Chance! - JK

yourpastself asked: Hi, I am looking for some skincare advice. I have extremely sensitive skin that is a little on the dry side. I also have a little bit of redness. I have tried so many different skincare lines and they either dry me out really badly or make me breakout. What skincare line would you suggest. I am willing to try/pay anything to find something that works. Thanks.

Hi there! Well as far as cleansers go, I like Avène’s Extremely Gentle Cleanser for Intolerant Skin. It’s soap-free, oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and colorant-free. You can choose to tissue the cleanser off or lightly splash with lukewarm water. It has minimal ingredients for maximum tolerance. Cleanses without stripping the skin and it’s suitable for the eye area.

I absolutely love Bioderma’s Sensibio H2O to remove all your makeup. I found out about this when I was in Paris last and I use it all the time in my kit, especially when I need to change makeup looks on my clients and models throughout the same day. Safe to use on the eyes as well.

One of my favorite treatment products for sensitive skin is Clarins Skin Beauty Repair Concentrate. The majority of the formula is made of pure plant extracts at calms irritation, redness, nurtures the skin and restores the balance. I use this as my emergency SOS product to instantly calm the skin. If you like it, then pair it with their Gentle Day Cream and Gentle Night Cream to keep your skin nourished and moisturized. I would also recommend lightly patting the products onto your skin and avoid rubbing. And as always, you should consult a dermatologist for any kind of sensitivity issues you have with your skin.

Hope this helps you out and thanks for the question! - JK

presqueshakespeare asked: My hair is thick and not really coarse, that's not the word. but it's got a lot of body to it, It's black and short, I'm having trouble getting the messy hair look, and my bangs are fringed but will never stay together, I'm just wondering what product would help with that?:) and thank you so much! for answering me!

It sounds like you need to get the weight cut out of your hair to remove the bulk.  Having movement in the hair is key to the “messy hair look.” Make an appointment with your hair stylist.  It is also very helpful to have a teasing comb/brush handy to backcomb from the mid-lengths to create the uncontrived hair-do.  Have a styling wax [spray preferred] to add texture and grunge. Add in twists here and there for added shape. Then finish with a good hairspray.  - JK

presqueshakespeare asked: Hey Jeremy, I was just wondering if you knew anything about styling hair. I know you're a make up artist, but if you could give me some products ...I have pictures of myself if you need them <3

Yes, I actually do hair as well. Let me know what questions you have about styling and the type of hair you have [i.e. fine/coarse, thick/thin]. Thanks for the question and support! :)
